Greek islands in September

September is the islands' quiet secret — the sea is at its warmest, the August crush has gone home, and the ferries still run often enough to island-hop on a whim. Start in Athens, then let the Cyclades set the pace: a white village, a beach, a late taverna, repeat.

When to go

September into early October — warm water, softer light and fewer people than the July–August peak, with ferries still frequent. By late October the season winds down and crossings thin out, so front-load the trip.

The shape of the trip

How it strings together.

  1. 1
    Athens

A day or two for the Acropolis, rooftop dinners and the market before the boats.

  2. 2
    Naxos or Paros

A bigger, greener island to settle into — beaches, villages and good food away from the crowds.

  3. 3
    Santorini

End on the caldera for the famous sunset — an overnight is enough, and better than a day-trip.

Good to know

  • ·Book ferries ahead in September — they're less frequent than midsummer and popular routes fill.
  • ·Two or three islands beats five; ferry days eat time, so leave room to actually stop.
  • ·A cabin or a car on the bigger islands opens up the beaches the buses don't reach.
