Thailand's islands split across two coasts with opposite weather, which is the one thing that trips people up — and the one thing worth planning around. Get it right and you string together limestone bays, all-night ferries and a beach for every mood, with Bangkok's food and temples to open or close the trip.
When to go
The Andaman coast (Phuket, Krabi, Ko Lanta, Phi Phi) is at its best November–April; the Gulf (Ko Samui, Ko Pha Ngan, Ko Tao) runs slightly later and stays drier into the shoulder months. December–March is the safe overlap for both. Avoid the Andaman in the summer monsoon.
The shape of the trip
Two or three nights to land, eat, and see the temples and markets before you head south.
Fly to Phuket or Krabi, then boat out to Phi Phi and Ko Lanta for limestone karsts and clear water.
Cross to Ko Samui, Ko Pha Ngan or the diving on Ko Tao — quieter, and on a different weather clock.
Loop back through Bangkok for the flight home, with a last night of street food.
