For a few weeks before Christmas the old squares of Central Europe fill with wooden stalls, roasting chestnuts and the smell of glühwein, and the cities are made for exactly this. It's an easy, romantic loop — short train hops between grand capitals, each with its own market and its own mood.
When to go
Mid-November to just before Christmas, when the markets are open and the cities are lit but the holiday closures haven't started. Weekdays are calmer than weekends; wrap up warm and expect cold, often clear, sometimes snowy days.

Good to know
- ·The trains between Vienna, Prague and Budapest are cheap, frequent and scenic — no need to fly between them.
- ·Keep the glühwein mug as a souvenir, or return it for your deposit — your call.
- ·It's cold; good boots and a proper coat make or break the evenings.
